MINUTES JUNE 3.2022 ISC

MINUTES TO MEETING June 3, 2022

of RCN INTERNATIONAL SERVICE COMMITTEE

AND Brenda and Eunice of Bring Hope Kenya

Present: Sudesh, Ritesth, Justice Joyce, Margaretta, Brenda and Eunice

AGENDA:

To collect relevant information on Bring Hope Kenya

1.     Brenda explains Eunice Naiperiai Ntoika (0713105311) is the Chairlady of Bring Hope Kenya, CBO (community-based organization registered two years ago). Eunice is her on-the-ground contact person. (ntoikaeunice01@gmail.com). Eunice is a graduate in Medical and Health Sciences with a diploma in applied biology.

2.     Eunice speaks both Maasai, her mother tongue and Samburu). Her staff includes Nailusa Josyline, secretary and Edwin Tom, treasurer.

3.     Bring Hope Kenya has assisted 45 students according to Brenda.

4.     Schools where they assist girls include 5 in Kajiado and 2 in Samburu

a.     Enoomatasiani Girls- Kajaido

b.     Baraka Girls, Kajaido

c.      Noonkopir Girls, Kajaido

d.     Sajiloni Girls, Kajaido

e.     Mount Carmel Girls, Kajaido

f.       Kisima Girls, Samburu

g.      Lasuk Primary, Samburu

5.     Major contacts in these areas

a.     Chief Carol in Kajaido-Bisil County (both Maasai girls and mixed Maasai and other tribes)

b.     Samburu: Eunice works with Moses Lelitoyio (0708641833)

6.     Brenda said she started working in that region 20 years ago. She is a 7th Day Adventists and apparently it was the church that started working there first. Unclear.  She says she aims to take a wholistic approach to girls health and empowerment, intent on assisting mainly secondary school girls with school fees, books, mattresses, etc. even food packages for when they go home, and transport. Brenda says she has sent girls to university and just ran a workshop this past week, the graduation from which is June 4th Saturday.

7.     FGM: we inquired about how FGM fits into Bring Hope Kenya, and she said BHK gets calls from Rescue Centres. Thereafter she provides post-rescue assistance to the girls in the form of school fees etc. She said she takes all the girls from rescue centres to boarding schools where she provides school uniforms, books, sanitary pads, transport, and food packages.

8.     Rescue Centres: Brenda said there are 12 Rescue Centres in Kajaido but what wasn’t clear was if these are all 7th Day Adventist Rescue Centre. Eunice could only identify 3:

a.     Kajiado Adventist Rescue Centre

b.     Bisil Primary Rescue Centre 0716957622

c.      Samburu Girls Rescue Centre 0714024618

d.     Not clear how FGM fits into this work…

e.     Brenda added that some girls are rescued by the Chief and by the community.

f.       The rescue centres call Eunice, looking for sponsors. There are several sponsors that support these girls although Brenda could not specify who they were. She said the Rescue Centres take care of the primary school girls (but I would think primary school girls need FGM protection as much as the secondary school girls do. Brenda apparently referred to free primary school education)

9.     WhatsApp chat group used by 15 graduates of the bring hope kenya girls.

10. Sustainability was an open question that was discussed but not resolved. Rotary only can sponsor one year. After that?? Brenda says she spends lots of time fundraising. But she does not have funding to follow up after our year

11.Brenda promised to send us: names of girls to be beneficiary of Rotary funding, School and Supplies given.

12.Bring Hope Kenya has double registration: in Germany and in Kenya. Sudesh has asked Brenda to send us copies of both registrations. She said she would.

13.Query: what if girls go home for holiday and girls are kept back from return to school? what provision does BHK have for that. Brenda had done apparently, except to say some girls stay with the Chief during the school holidays.
